There are many things which you should apply on your blog but you will understand them as you spend time with WordPress. Here I am putting some basic steps in front of you which are necessary after installing WordPress for any blog.
1. WordPress Time Zone:
Firstly you have to change your default time zone. To do this go to Settings> General, and change your default time zone according to your country. This will help you to schedule your blog posts.
2. WordPress Permalink Structure:
You have to change your default permalink structure to custom permalink structure. The default permalink structure is http://yourdomain.com/p=1, but it is not search engine friendly. So you have to change it to /%postname.html. This structure contain some of keywords of your post so it can increase your search engine visibility.
3. Change Admin User for Security:
The default WordPress login ID is Admin. This is a risky job because of some security reasons. To ensure the security of your blog create a new user and give him the administrators rights and delete the previous admin account. Now you can login with your new user account. Make sure you use a complex password for your blog.
4. Disable User Registration:
If you are a newbie and not allowing the guest posts yet than you should keep the WordPress registration disable. Disable it under Settings > General. This will block the spam registration on your blog.
5. Update WordPress Ping list:
By default WordPress pings only one ping service but you can extend the ping services manually. Change the settings under Settings> Writing. You can get the ping list from the web and insert the ping list in the above section.
6. WordPress comment Gravatar:
If you want to show the avatars of your commentators of blog who did not signed for Gravatar than you will need to update this setting. Under Settings > Discussion, you can change the default image to be shown for people who have not signed up for Gravatar.
Although there are many settings and steps which are required for a WordPress blog but as you will spend time with your blog, you will understand them. The above settings are needs to be done quickly after installing WordPress on your blog.
